A reference check is a process where prospective employer(s) reach out to validate your work history and experiences. When completing a job application, you may be asked to provide the names of a few organizations/people who can confirm your background and prior work experiences.
This section emphasizes the importance of following the reference check process correctly, if you plan to include Extern as a reference.
As a reminder, you should not list your host company or mentors in your reference requests. Thousands of students complete externships annually. As such, companies are not able to process the volume of reference requests for students completing the externship experiences. Consequently, all of your program information is secured with Extern, ensuring a smooth and efficient process.
As such, all reference/recommendation requests MUST be submitted to Extern directly. Should you need a reference check (now or in the future), please email referencechecks@extern.com with all requests. DO NOT email your program manager or the host company directly; references are managed through a centralized process request. Submitting directly through the host company will likely mean your reference will be blocked or denied, resulting in delays and loss of your opportunity.
If you have any questions or concerns, please remember you are not alone in this process. You are welcome to email referencechecks@extern.com, larae.snoddy@extern.com, or support@extern.com for any assistance you may need. Check your email and platform for additional guidance on listing your externship on your resume or LinkedIn.
